Longhorns 2004 Wall Calendar
Longhorn cattle were first brought over to Mexico by Christopher Columbus. Later, ranchers drove the cattle to the north (now Texas). Many of the cattle escaped or were abandoned. They adapted and survived in the wild. After the Civil War the wild Longhorns were found and were favored by ranchers for their ability to go long periods of time without water. But soon Longhorns were replaced by faster producing cattle and the Longhorns almost became extinct. Preservation funds were set up by the government for the cattle in the 1920's and the population began to grow. The proven sturdiness of the Longhorn is being recognized today and this magnificent animal is once again growing in popularity.
